No Pictures Please: Researchers Develop System to Thwart Unwanted Video and Still Photography

Sorce Article
Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology have completed a prototype device that can block digital-camera function in a given area. Commercial versions of the technology could be used to stymie unwanted use of video or still cameras.

So, next time the LAPD beats Rodney King to a pulp, they won;t have to worry about those nasty camcorders!
There are actually major problems with their approach.

The first is the comment about using infra-red to spot the CCDs, which won't work as digital cameras have an IR filter to keep IR (which the CCDs are sensitive to) from altering the color balance of the image.

Second, while camcorders and lower-end digital cameras make great retroreflectors, high-end digital cameras have something this system cannot get around, namely a shutter, which keeps the CCD covered until that tiny fraction of a second the exposure is being made.

But where this will really run into trouble is sheer annoyance and potential liability issues, because there is something else in those venues with a lens and retroreflective image-sensor, and that is the human eye! Start flashing bright beams of light into the audiences' eyes and you will start losing ticket sales, or worse, get sued. A light bright enough to overwhelm the CCD of a camcorder is bright enough to damage a retina.

The Miami Seven: How Dangerous are They Really??

See Video

Jon Stewart takes a look at the case known to many as "The Miami Seven." He examines the careful and decisive evidence told to us by Alberto Gonzales:

"Terror plot" against Chicago skyscraper? Farcical.

by Adam Harvey, Herald Sun [Melbourne, Australia]

June 25, 2006
Unknown News.org

The plot sounded menacing: a group of home-grown terrorists with sinister code names seek help from al-Qaida to attack the tallest US building, the 103-storey Sears Tower in Chicago. But as more details emerge of a supposed terror plot interrupted by US authorities, the plotters and their half-baked plan seem less than deadly and more than a little ridiculous.

The seven alleged plotters were mostly unemployed men from a poor suburb of Miami who had no weapons, explosives or money, and were so disorganized they asked their "al-Qaida" contact for uniforms and boots for their "Islamic army", and a camera to take pictures of their target.

A man the plotters thought was an al-Qaida representative turned out to be an undercover agent who helped them: he took their shoe sizes and gave them boots, but failed to provide other items allegedly requested: guns, vehicles, $70,000 cash and bullet-proof vests.

While relatives said they were harmless and not even Muslims, an indictment released by the US Attorney-General, Albert Gonzales, said the men had sworn an oath of allegiance to al-Qaida. Ringleader Narseal Batiste had promised to wage "a full ground war" against the US to "kill all the devils we can" in a mission "just as good or greater than 9/11".

It is unclear whether the Sears Tower attack was suggested by the suspects or the undercover agent. The plotters also wanted to attack FBI buildings, the indictment said, and Batiste used the informant's camera to photograph the FBI building in North Miami Beach and other Miami government buildings.

That was as far as the plotters got.

"It was more aspirational than operational," said John Pistole, the FBI's deputy director.

Neighbors of the warehouse in an area of Miami called Liberty City described the men as a militaristic group, in their teens and 20s, that did not seem threatening. Relatives said the men were part of a community group that had tried to start a local restaurant. A neighbor said they seemed "brainwashed".

"They'd come out late at night and exercise," said Tashawn Rose, 29.

"It seemed like a military boot camp that they were working on there. They would come out and stand guard."

The indictment said the men used code names like "Brother Naz" and "Brother Sunni."

Security at Sears Tower was already tight after previous bomb threats.

"Federal and local authorities continue to tell us they've never found evidence of a credible terrorism threat against Sears Tower," said building managing director, Barbara Carley.

Meanwhile Florida Islamic leaders said the men were not Muslims, not linked to the local Islamic community and were members of a cult.

"As far as we are concerned they have no relation with our community their ideology has nothing in common with the ideology of Islam and they should not be called Muslim," said Ahmed Bedier of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

Limbaugh detained at Palm Beach airport

Tue Jun 27, 4:25 AM ET
Associated Press

Rush Limbaugh was detained for more than three hours Monday at Palm Beach International Airport after authorities said they found a bottle of Viagra in his possession without a prescription.

Customs officials found a prescription bottle labeled as Viagra in his luggage that didn't have Limbaugh's name on it, but that of two doctors, said Paul Miller, spokesman for the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.

A doctor had prescribed the drug, but it was "labeled as being issued to the physician rather than Mr. Limbaugh for privacy purposes," Roy Black, Limbaugh's attorney, said in a statement.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection examined the 55-year-old radio commentator's luggage after his private plane landed at the airport from the Dominican Republic, said Miller.

The matter was referred to the sheriff's office, whose investigators interviewed Limbaugh. According to Miller, Limbaugh said that the Viagra was for his use, and that he obtained it from his doctors.

Investigators confiscated the drugs, which treats erectile dysfunction, and Limbaugh was released without being charged.

The sheriff's office plans to file a report with the state attorney's office. Miller said it could be a second-degree misdemeanor violation.

Limbaugh reached a deal last month with prosecutors who had accused the conservative talk-show host of illegally deceiving multiple doctors to receive overlapping painkiller prescriptions. Under the deal, the charge, commonly referred to as "doctor shopping," would be dismissed after 18 months if he continues to submit to random drug tests and treatment for his acknowledged addiction to painkillers.

Israelis Hold Keys To NSA, US Govt Computers
By Christopher Bollyn
American Free Press
7-4-6

The most critical computer and communication networks used by the U.S. government and military are secured by encryption software written by an Israeli "code breaker" tied to an Israeli state-run scientific institution.

The National Security Agency (NSA), the U.S. intelligence agency with the mandate to protect government and military computer networks and provide secure communications for all branches of the U.S. government uses security software written by an Israeli code breaker whose home office is located at the Weizmann Institute in Israel.

A Bedford, Massachusetts-based company called RSA Security, Inc. issued a press release on March 28, 2006, which revealed that the NSA would be using its security software:

"U.S. Department of Defense Agency Selects RSA Security Encryption Software" was the headline of the company's press release which announced that the National Security Agency had selected its encryption software to be used in the agency's "classified communications project."

RSA stands for the names of the founders of the company: Ronald L. Rivest, Adi Shamir, and Leonard M. Adleman. Adi Shamir, the lead theoretician, is an Israeli citizen and a professor at the Weizmann Institute, a scientific institution tied to the Israeli defense establishment.

"My main area of research is cryptography -- making and breaking codes," Shamir's webpage at the Weizmann Institute says. "It is motivated by the explosive growth of computer networks and wireless communication. Without cryptographic protection, confidential information can be exposed to eavesdroppers, modified by hackers, or forged by criminals."

The NSA/Central Security Service defines itself as America's cryptologic organization, which "coordinates, directs, and performs highly specialized activities to protect U.S. government information systems and produce foreign signals intelligence information."

The fact that the federal intelligence agency responsible for protecting the most critical computer systems and communications networks used by all branches of the U.S. government and military is using Israeli-made encryption software should come as no surprise. The RSA press release is just the icing on the cake; the keys to the most critical computer networks in the United States have long been held in Israeli hands.

AFP inquired with the NSA about its use of Israeli-made security software for classified communications projects and asked why such outsourcing was not seen as a national security threat. Why is "America's cryptologic organization" using Israeli encryption codes?

NSA spokesman Ken White said that the agency is "researching" the matter and would respond in the coming week.

American Free Press has previously revealed that scores of "security software" companies -- spawned and funded by the Mossad, the Israeli military intelligence agency -- have proliferated in the United States. The "security" software products of many of these usually short-lived Israeli-run companies have been integrated into the computer products which are provided to the U.S. government by leading suppliers such as Unisys.

Unisys integrated Israeli security software, provided by the Israel-based Check Point Software Technologies and Eurekify, into its own software, so that Israeli software, written by Mossad-linked companies, now "secures" the most sensitive computers in the U.S. government and commercial sector.

The Mossad-spawned computer security firms typically have a main office based in the U.S. while their research and development is done in Israel. The Mossad start-up firms usually have short lives before they are acquired for exaggerated sums of money by a larger company, enriching their Israeli owners in the process and integrating the Israeli directors and their Mossad-produced software into the parent company.

RSA, for example, an older security software company, acquired an Israeli-run security software company, named Cyota, at the end of 2005 for $145 million.

In January 2005, Cyota, "the leading provider of online security and anti-fraud solutions for financial institutions" had announced that "security expert" Amit Yoran, had joined the company's board of directors. Prior to becoming a director at Cyota, Yoran, a 34-year old Israeli, had already been the national "Cyber Czar," having served as director of the Department of Homeland Security's National Cyber Security Division.

Yoran had been appointed "Cyber Czar" at age 32 by President George W. Bush in September 2003.

Before joining DHS, Yoran had been vice president for worldwide managed security services at Symantec. Prior to that, he had been the founder, president and CEO of Riptech, Inc., an information security management and monitoring firm, which Symantec acquired in 2002 for $145 million.

Yoran and his brother Naftali Elad Yoran are graduates of the U.S. Military Academy at Westpoint. Elad graduated in 1991 and Amit in 1993. Along with their brother Dov, the Yoran brothers are key players in the security software market. Amit has also held critical positions in the U.S. government overseeing computer security for the very systems that apparently failed on 9/11.

Before founding Riptech in 1998, Yoran directed the vulnerability-assessment program within the computer emergency response team at the US Department of Defense. Yoran previously served as an officer in the United States Air Force as the Director of Vulnerability Programs for the Department of Defense's Computer Emergency Response Team and in support of the Assistant Secretary of Defense's Office.

In June 2005, Yoran joined the board of directors of Guardium, Inc., another Mossad-spawned "provider of database security solutions" based in Waltham, Massachusetts.

Guardium is linked with Ptech, an apparent Mossad "cut out" computer security company linked with the 9/11 attacks.

Ptech, a computer software company in Quincy, Mass., was supposedly a small start-up company founded by a Lebanese Muslim and funded by a Saudi millionaire. Yet Ptech's clients included all the key federal governmental agencies, including the U.S. Army, the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Naval Air Command, Congress, the Department of Energy, the Federal Aviation Administration, the Internal Revenue Service, NATO, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Secret Service and even the White House.

The marketing manager at Ptech, Inc. when the company started in the mid-1990s, however, was not a Muslim or an Arab, but an American Jewish lawyer named Michael S. Goff who had suddenly quit his law firm for no apparent reason and joined the Arab-run start-up company.

Goff was the company's information systems manager and had single-handedly managed the company's marketing and "all procurement" of software, systems and peripherals. He also trained the employees. Goff was obviously the key person at Ptech.

In the wake of 9/11, during the Citizens' Commission hearings in New York, Indira Singh, a consultant who had worked on a Defense Advanced Research Project, pointed to Ptech and MITRE Corp. being involved in computer "interoperability issues" between the FAA and NORAD. At this time Ptech's ties to Arabs was the focus, and Goff was out of the picture.

"Ptech was with MITRE Corporation in the basement of the FAA for two years prior to 9/11," Singh said. "Their specific job is to look at interoperability issues the FAA had with NORAD and the Air Force in the case of an emergency. If anyone was in a position to know that the FAA -- that there was a window of opportunity or to insert software or to change anything -- it would have been Ptech along with MITRE."

The Mossad-run Guardium company is linked with Ptech through Goff Communications, the Holliston, Mass.-based public relations firm previously run by Michael S. Goff and his wife Marcia, which represents Guardium. Since being exposed in AFP in 2005, however, Michael's name no longer appears on the company website.

Photo: Amit Yoran, the Israeli "Cyber Security Czar" appointed by President George W. Bush in 2003. Yoran has held various positions since the 1990s in which he oversaw computer security for the Dept. of Defense computers.

Although he and his brother reportedly grew up in Pound Ridge, New York during the 1970s and 1980s, the heads of the Jewish community told AFP that they had never heard of him. One said that she had conducted a survey of the Jews living in the small village of Pound Ridge in the 1970s and she would have remembered if a wealthy Israeli family named Yoran had been found.

Why did the locals in Pound Ridge NOT remember the Yorans?

Probably because they were NOT in Pound Ridge - but in Israel. The Pound Ridge address was used to give the appearance that the Yorans were Americans. I spoke with Elad and he has a distinctive Israeli accent - not what you would expect for a guy who grew up in a posh Yankee village.

So who are the Yorans? Who are their parents and why did they come to the United States? To raise a couple high-level moles to infiltrate the most sensitive U.S. computer networks? How could they have lived for 20 years in Pound Ridge and NOT be remembered.

A Father’s Presence Helps Young Girls Resist Shallow, Sexualized Self-Images

Date: Tuesday, June 20, 2006
By: Tonyaa Weathersbee, BlackAmericaWeb.com

When I was growing up, I remember two occasions when I felt my father’s pride blanketing me like a comforting sleep.

One was the time when I was eight years old and had memorized Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream,” speech. The other was eight years later, when I beat out hundreds of other high school students in Jacksonville to win a countywide essay contest -- and a trip to Valley Forge, Penn.

He and my mother snapped Polaroid after Polaroid of me ascending the escalator at the airport for what would be my first flight ever -- me all smiles in my hot pink pantsuit and lime green and pink blouse and scarf. That ensemble was glaring enough to force a person into prescription sunglasses prematurely, but my father’s smile was almost as bright.

Funny thing, though. While I remember my father being proud of me for my academic achievements and my smarts, I don’t remember him telling me that I was pretty. He never pushed me to go out for the cheerleading squad -- even though being a cutesy, cartwheel-turning cheerleader was my life and one of the most popular “jobs” in high school.

And maybe the fact that I can’t remember him telling me that is a good thing. Good because the memory that stands out is that my dad pushed me to see my worth in what was in my head and in my heart, and not on how I looked and whether I could get guys to like me.

I think about my father -- who’s still very much alive, by the way -- when I think of the scores of young black girls who are growing up without a strong father or no father in their lives. While there’s a saying that it takes a father to teach his son to be a man, I believe that an addendum ought to be that it takes a father to teach his daughter to love herself for what’s inside, not for what’s on the outside.

Unfortunately, the outside seems to be getting all the attention these days. So much so that it tends to shout down everything else.

Look at the teen magazine racks these days, and you’ll find not only pouty, sexualized teen models gracing the covers, but teaser articles that tend to be more about how girls can make boys like them than how to prepare for college. There’s Lil’ Kim, who has found lewdness and lawbreaking to be lucrative, and Kim Roberts, the second stripper and convicted embezzler who e-mailed the public relations firm that represented Lil’ Kim for advice on how she could market the Duke lacrosse team rape scandal to her advantage.

We’re talking rape allegations here.

And who can forget Karrine Steffans, the video vixen whose sexual prowess with assorted rappers earned her the nickname “Superhead.”

You’d think she would have cringed in shame at a nickname that, in another time, would be fodder for locker room obnoxiousness. But not Steffans. She wears it on a shirt.

Now, I know that every black girl who sees this kind of craziness won’t hinge their esteem on their looks or their sexuality. I know they have to know that there are other ways to make money -- to get rich even.

But I believe that black girls who don’t have the guidance and the endearing presence of fathers may be more vulnerable to caving in to the images of black girls that BET beams over the airwaves. Lil’ Kim’s relationship with her father was tumultuous, and Steffans’ father was absent for much of her life. And while these women may have chosen their current lives regardless, I have to wonder whether they would be weighing their worth by their ability to titillate if they had gotten the message early on that their beauty was only one small aspect of what they had to offer.

That’s a message that a caring father is eminently qualified to impart to his daughter.

Such messages are especially needed nowadays, as videos and magazines inject images of idealized, over sexualized women into the brains of young girls on a daily basis. Fathers can counteract that culture of shallowness. Can protect their daughters by making them feel worthy of love and of life’s good things, regardless of whether they are cheerleader, cover girl or music video material.

So now I look back and realize how lucky I am to have a father who was more pleased when I accomplished something from what I found in the books than by what I saw in the mirror.

Because in the end, my esteem beamed brighter than my reflection.

Police bypass warrants and subpoenas, obtain personal data from brokers

Commentary 1: Congressional investigators estimated the U.S. government spent $30 million last year buying personal data from private brokers.

But that number likely understates the breadth of transactions, since brokers said they rarely charge law enforcement agencies.

Commentary 2 by Helen & Harry Highwater:

"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."

by Ted Bridis and John Solomon, Associated Press

June 21, 2006

Federal and local police across the country -- as well as some of the nation's best-known companies -- have been gathering Americans' phone records from private data brokers without subpoenas or warrants.

Private data brokers who covertly gather these records on behalf of banks, bail bondsmen and even federal and local police are bracing for intensive scrutiny by Congress. Legal experts and privacy advocates said police reliance on private vendors who commit such acts raises civil liberties questions.

Those using data brokers include agencies of the Homeland Security and Justice departments -- including the FBI and U.S. Marshal's Service -- and municipal police departments in California, Florida, Georgia and Utah. Experts believe hundreds of other departments frequently use such services.

"We are requesting any and all information you have regarding the above cell phone account and the account holder ... including account activity and the account holder's address," Ana Bueno, a police investigator in Redwood City, Calif., wrote in October to PDJ Investigations of Granbury, Texas.

An agent in Denver for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Anna Wells, sent a similar request on March 31 on Homeland Security stationery: "I am looking for all available subscriber information for the following phone number," Wells wrote to a corporate alias used by PDJ.

Congressional investigators estimated the U.S. government spent $30 million last year buying personal data from private brokers. But that number likely understates the breadth of transactions, since brokers said they rarely charge law enforcement agencies.

These brokers, many of whom market aggressively on the Internet, have tricked telephone carriers into revealing private customer information and broken into online accounts, sometimes by guessing passwords that were the names of pets, according to documents obtained by The Associated Press.

"She has two pets, one named Rainbow and the other is Max," wrote a private detective, Donnie Tidmore of Waco, Texas, in September in e-mail to a data broker, PDJ Investigations of Granbury, Texas. The detective wanted lists of cellular calls and the Social Security number of a Virgin Mobile USA subscriber for a case. Tidmore didn't return a phone message from the AP late Tuesday.

Sensitive to public unease over disclosures of private phone records in the murky industry, U.S. lawmakers pledged oversight hearings starting Wednesday to investigate which laws, if any, might have been violated:

• Did customers, who included police agencies, lenders, collection firms and suspicious spouses, break laws when they sought records of someone's private telephone calls?

• Did data brokers commit crimes when they provided the information for a price?

• Did contractors working with brokers violate laws by calling telephone companies and impersonating customers to trick carriers into revealing private billing information?

• Did leading telephone companies break laws by not protecting customer information more vigorously?

A lawmaker who has investigated the industry said he was concerned about data brokers. "There's a good chance there are some laws being broken, but it's not really clear precisely which laws," said Rep. Ed Whitfield, R-Ky., head of the House Energy and Commerce investigations subcommittee.

Documents gathered by Whitfield's committee show data brokers use trickery, impersonation and even technology to try to gather Americans' phone records. "They can basically obtain any information about anybody on any subject," Whitfield said.

Lawyers for the data brokers said the companies are innocent, that brokers protected themselves by requiring their contract workers to sign statements promising to obey the law.

"While it may be distasteful for many, there was no bright-line law that prohibited this," said James Bearden, a Texas lawyer who represents four such data brokers and was expected to attend this week's congressional inquiry.

He likened the companies' activities to the National Security Agency, which reportedly compiles the phone records of ordinary Americans. "The government is doing exactly what these people are accused of doing," Bearden said. "These people are being demonized. These are people who are partners with law enforcement on a regular basis."

Many of the executives summoned to testify were expected to decline to answer questions, invoking their Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination.

PDJ's lawyer, Larry Slade, said he was confident no one at the company violated laws, but he acknowledged, "I'm not sure that every law enforcement agency in the country would agree with that analysis."

Documents turned over under subpoena to congressional investigators provide an unprecedented glimpse into how the industry operates. They show some of America's most famous corporate names -- from automakers to insurers to banks -- purchasing information on private citizens, often to track down delinquent customers.

Two such companies, Wells Fargo & Co. and State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Co., said they have since ended relationships with data broker companies.

Obfuscation was the norm in an underground industry where lies are a way of doing business.

A California private investigator, Jay Rosenzweig, told the AP his detective firm occasionally worked with PDJ only to deliver a subpoena or record a witness statement. He said PDJ never gathered telephone records. "They don't do any of that work," Rosenzweig said.

But internal PDJ e-mails show Rosenzweig sought cellular telephone records of at least two people as recently as March. PDJ complained to Rosenzweig days later that operators at Verizon Wireless were being uncooperative. "Sorry we cannot get this one," a PDJ employee wrote to Rosenzweig, who replied, "Thanks."

After AP described the documents to Rosenzweig contradicting his statements, Rosenzweig said: "I don't know what to tell you. I don't want to get into this. I never broke any laws."

African-American Soldiers Victims of Secret Vote-Blocking Campaign by Republicans in 2004

Published by Greg Palast June 16th, 2006 in Articles
Massacre of the Buffalo Soldiers
by Greg Palast
As reported for Democracy Now!

Palast, who first reported this story for BBC Television Newsnight (UK) and Democracy Now! (USA), is author of the New York Times bestseller, Armed Madhouse.

The Republican National Committee has a special offer for African-American soldiers: Go to Baghdad, lose your vote.

A confidential campaign directed by GOP party chiefs in October 2004 sought to challenge the ballots of tens of thousands of voters in the last presidential election, virtually all of them cast by residents of Black-majority precincts.
Files from the secret vote-blocking campaign were obtained by BBC Television Newsnight, London. They were attached to emails accidentally sent by Republican operatives to a non-party website.

One group of voters wrongly identified by the Republicans as registering to vote from false addresses: servicemen and women sent overseas.
Listen to Greg Palast’s discussion with broadcaster Amy Goodman on the Black soldier purge of 2004

SCAM
Here’s how the scheme worked: The RNC mailed these voters letters in envelopes marked, “Do not forward”, to be returned to the sender. These letters were mailed to servicemen and women, some stationed overseas, to their US home addresses. The letters then returned to the Bush-Cheney campaign as “undeliverable.”

The lists of soldiers of “undeliverable” letters were transmitted from state headquarters, in this case Florida, to the RNC in Washington. The party could then challenge the voters’ registration and thereby prevent their absentee ballots being counted.

One target list was comprised exclusively of voters registered at the Jacksonville, Florida, Naval Air Station. Jacksonville is third largest naval installation in the US, best known as home of the Blue Angels fighting squandron.
See the list of names here

Our team contacted the homes of several on the caging list, such as Randall Prausa, a serviceman, whose wife said he had been ordered overseas.

A soldier returning home in time to vote in November 2004 could also be challenged on the basis of the returned envelope. Soldiers challenged would be required to vote by “provisional” ballot.

Over one million provisional ballots cast in the 2004 race were never counted; over half a million absentee ballots were also rejected. The extraordinary rise in the number of rejected ballots was the result of the widespread multi-state voter challenge campaign by the Republican Party. The operation, of which the purge of Black soldiers was a small part, was the first mass challenge to voting America had seen in two decades.

The BBC obtained several dozen confidential emails sent by the Republican’s national Research Director and Deputy Communications chief, Tim Griffin to GOP Florida campaign chairman Brett Doster and other party leaders. Attached were spreadsheets marked, “Caging.xls.” Each of these contained several hundred to a few thousand voters and their addresses.

A check of the demographics of the addresses on the “caging lists,” as the GOP leaders called them indicated that most were in African-American majority zip codes.

Ion Sanco, the non-partisan elections supervisor of Leon County (Tallahassee) when shown the lists by this reporter said: “The only thing I can think of - African American voters listed like this - these might be individuals that will be challenged if they attempted to vote on Election Day.”

These GOP caging lists were obtained by the same BBC team that first exposed the wrongful purge of African-American “felon” voters in 2000 by then-Secretary of State Katherine Harris. Eliminating the voting rights of those voters — 94,000 were targeted — likely caused Al Gore’s defeat in that race.

The Republican National Committee in Washington refused our several requests to respond to the BBC discovery. However, in Tallahassee, the Florida Bush campaign’s spokespeople offered several explanations for the list.

Joseph Agostini, speaking for the GOP, suggested the lists were of potential donors to the Bush campaign. Oddly, the supposed donor list included residents of the Sulzbacher Center a shelter for homeless families.

Another spokesperson for the Bush campaign, Mindy Tucker Fletcher, ultimately changed the official response, acknowledging that these were voters, “we mailed to, where the letter came back - bad addresses.”

The party has refused to say why it would mark soldiers as having “bad addresses” subject to challenge when they had been assigned abroad.

The apparent challenge campaign was not inexpensive. The GOP mailed the letters first class, at a total cost likely exceeding millions of dollars, so that the addresses would be returned to “cage” workers.

“This is not a challenge list,” insisted the Republican spokesmistress. However, she modified that assertion by adding, “That’s not what it’s set up to be.”
Setting up such a challenge list would be a crime under federal law. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 outlaws mass challenges of voters where race is a factor in choosing the targeted group.

While the party insisted the lists were not created for the purpose to challenge Black voters, the GOP ultimately offered no other explanation for the mailings. However, Tucker Fletcher asserted Republicans could still employ the list to deny ballots to those they considered suspect voters. When asked if Republicans would use the list to block voters, Tucker Fletcher replied, “Where it’s stated in the law, yeah.”

It is not possible at this time to determine how many on the potential blacklist were ultimately challenged and lost their vote. Soldiers sending in their ballot from abroad would not know their vote was lost because of a challenge.

For the robber-baron right-wing, illegal immigration works

It delivers what the right-wing wants -- dirt-cheap labor and sky-high profits. It delivers a class of people who can be trampled without worries about their rights. And best of all, it delivers deluded voters, hyped up and worried about illegal immigrants, casting their ballots for candidates who fan that outrage ... and will fan that outrage again at the next election, and the election after that, for as many elections, as many years or decades as the suckers are willing to suck on that lie.

by Helen & Harry Highwater, Unknown News June 21, 2006

Like all of America, we're swimming through lies every day of the week. The Bush-Cheney administration is a veritable lie machine, lying about Iraq, lying about the economy, lying about sex and drugs and civil rights, lying about terrorism, lying about all matters of policy, and smearing anyone who exposes their lies and gets any attention.

They lie because if they told the truth, many millions of deluded Americans would know they'd been had, taken as suckers.

The leading lie of the moment is that the Bush-Cheney administration is doing something about illegal immigration. And like all lies told by slick, well-practiced liars, a lot of people are swallowing it.

Oooh, illegal immigrants -- scary. Or I'm chatting with a stranger on the bus, thinking I've found an ally because he's wearing an "Impeach Bush" button, and all of the sudden he starts repeating lies to me about "damn illegals." Or I'm listening to Mike Malloy or Sam Seder or one of the few other sane voices on talk radio, and a caller will start lying, "We need to round up the illegal immigrants and ship 'em back to Mexico."

People, please scrub the Republicans' lies out of your brain. All this recent panic over illegal immigrants -- it's a smokescreen, designed to divert Americans' attention from all the real problems, designed to fool people into voting Republican this fall. If you're buying their line of crap, please, stop and think.

There's nothing wrong with America's immigration policy that wasn't wrong a year ago, or five years ago. There's been no sudden flood of illegal immigrants streaming across the border, just a sudden flood of publicity about it.

The Republicans control the White House, the Congress, the Courts, and they have had this complete control for several years. Why are we only hearing about illegal immigration now, a few months before the mid-term elections?

Bingo. The elections are coming, so it's time for the Republicans to scare the good sense out of voters, so suddenly a new major issue appears out of nowhere. Sometimes it's gay marriage, sometimes it's affirmative action, this time it's illegal immigration, but always it's about fear, about scaring you into voting Republican.

And when the election is over, the issue will be forgotten again, because there's nothing wrong with America's immigration policy that isn't wrong on purpose, by design. The so-called "problem" of a huge influx of illegal immigrants taking America's crappiest jobs at illegally low wages is created by policies specifically crafted to do exactly that.

Do you work for a living in corporate America? Then you've probably noticed that the people in charge prefer paying low wages instead of high wages, and they like people who don't complain. It's no coincidence that the long-standing US immigration policy delivers a steady supply of people who will work for illegally low wages and won't complain about it. That's what the robber-baron right-wing wants, and that's the policy they've purchased.

Illegal immigration is a problem, but it's not a problem to the political elite in the Bush-Cheney administration. It might sound "tough" when the liars promise to arrest and deport the many, many millions of illegal immigrants in America, but it's impossible. It can't be done without a horrendously expensive program, without hiring millions of armed officers, building millions of new prison cells, processing millions and millions of deportation papers and buying all those millions of bus, plane, or train tickets to Mexico -- all at a cost that would rival or exceed the war in Iraq.

Not to mention, of course, that the first thing the millions of deported Mexicans would do, upon returning to their native country, is come back to America.

And not to mention what's even more obvious, that it's inhuman and impossible to "solve" the problem just by punishing the victims -- illegal immigrants.

It would be simple to really solve the problem of illegal immigration. Punish employers who hire illegal immigrants. That's all it would take, to end illegal immigration. Start punishing corporate giants like Tyson Chicken and Wal-Mart when they hire illegal immigrants, and work your way down to the farms, fast food operations, and local construction firms that hire illegal immigrants. Make the penalties truly tough, not for the worker but for the employer, and the immigration flow will almost immediately slow, then stop, and start flowing in the other direction across the border. Millions and millions of Mexicans, unable to find work in America, will find their way home to Mexico.

None of this is rocket science. It's easy and obvious.

But for all their hate-mongering, the Republican panic-artists will never, ever advocate such a solution, because it would work. Because to them, illegal immigration isn't a problem.

For the robber-baron right-wing, illegal immigration works.

Don't be one of the suckers who believe the lies.

The only solution to illegal immigration is to go after the employers, and Republicans will never, never do that. A vote for the Republicans, then, is a vote for more and more illegal immigration, and more and more lies.

24 Arrested In Carmel Park Sex Sting
Wed Jun 21, 7:08 PM ET

Twenty-three men and one woman were arrested in a sting targeting sexual activity at a Carmel-area park, police said Wednesday.

Police said the 24 engaged in sexual activity in clear view of undercover officers at Cool Creek Park. Most of the incidents involved men looking for sex with other men, police said.

The undercover officers went to the park to look for lewd behavior after people complained about sexual activity there, authorities said.

"It's unacceptable to me ... that there's an environment in which our kids are not safe to be, and the parks in this county are not going to be one of those places," Hamilton County Sheriff Doug Carter told reporters at a press conference.

The arrestees ranged in age from 21 to 81, 6News' Jeremy Brilliant reported.

Most of the 24 were arrested on charges of performance harmful to minors, a class D felony. No children were involved in the alleged sexual activity, but the felony charge because the activity happened in a public park frequented by children, authorities said.

OBM: If the wealthy suburbs were patroled just as much as the so-called bad neighborhoods this might not of been happening. The people arrested felt real comfortable to be doing this at this park.

Man Shot With Taser Gun Dies In Police Custody

POSTED: 6:21 am EDT June 22, 2006
UPDATED: 7:58 am EDT June 22, 2006

INDIANAPOLIS -- A man died Wednesday night in police custody after he scuffled with officers following a domestic argument.

Joseph Stockdale, 26, was pronounced dead at about 9 p.m. Police said Stockdale had been Maced and shot with a Taser gun by two Indianapolis police officers.

Investigators were called to a home in the 2900 block of North Colorado Avenue, on the city's east side.

Officers said Stockdale had been in an argument with his girlfriend, who lives at the home, and some neighbors. Police said Stockdale became combative when officers asked him to leave.

Officers said Stockdale began fighting with police, and swung a ceramic statue at them. Officials said officers began using the Mace and Taser gun after Stockdale began fighting.

Medics were called to the scene to check out minor scrapes on Stockdale's body, but police said he refused treatment and the medics left.

An officer then noticed that Stockdale had stopped breathing as police waited for a wagon to come pick him up.

Medics were again called to the scene. Stockdale was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

An investigation is under way to determine the cause of Stockdale's death.

Super-wide Highway & Bush: Background & Opinion Article on Info. the Goverment is Not Telling You.

Source Article
By Ted Twietmeyer
tedtw@frontiernet.net
6-20-6

BACKGROUND:
Bush Administration Quietly Plans NAFTA Super Highway

OPINION ARTICLE:
TRANS-TEXAS CORRIDOR
Think this highway stops at the northern border of Texas? [1]

Some of us have been aware for a few years that this super-wide super-highway was under construction. And what of those longshoreman losing jobs - where are they now? This type of labor is almost extinct since almost everything is now containerized. Containerized cargo is how merchandise enters (and sometimes leaves) America's ports, with the exception of trucks and automobiles. One or two operators working in an overhead crane today completely fill or empty a cargo ship directly to and from semi-truck trailers in just a few hours.

We can see that effects from this super-wide super-highway can be far reaching. In fact, the implications of this quiet construction project to build a PRIVATE highway are global in nature and may show us what the future holds.

There is yet another serious reason for the highway that seemingly no one considers. Few recall that back in 2001, the self-appointed American dictator stated his list of countries comprising the "axis of evil." China was also on that list. Later the dictator retracted it. But do we really believe it was removed from the list? Hardly.

Throughout history, any nation perceived as too powerful was ALWAYS a target for war. This fact has never changed. The Mid-East proved this point all too well. War there has always been about oil (which even Cheney admitted this in a press conference - "it's always been about oil.") There currently are other ruthless dictators executing race wars elsewhere in the world, which we rarely hear about. At the last count this author heard, there were some 40 conflicts among the nations of the world. Africa has problems between nations throughout it's history. But the key point here is that oil and/or money IS power. and will always be serious reasons for war. Economically powerful nations are always targets for war, too. This is something like a version of the classic "haves vs. the have-nots." What nation on earth today is the most solvent, economically powerful nation in the world where far more money flows IN than out? Hint - it begins with the letter "C."

A war with China is what many experts have stated is inevitable. This will result in a cut-off almost overnight of the majority of store products, with the exception of food, health and beauty aids. Once the war begins, products will stop flowing into North America when the pipeline of ships at sea is empty. In fact, we could see major ports become idle virtually overnight. And what of the billions of American dollars to which the Chinese economy is addicted to? It will cause China to start launching missles already known as the "Long March" - a name they gave to their ICBMs more than 30 years ago for missles that can reach America. They will have nothing to lose by doing so. Perhaps this is why new Wal-marts being built are painted in ugly Kaki colors - corporate management is already preparing for war. Since the chain has a long-standing relationship with Homeland Security from it's inception, they will become the distribution chain for food, staple items and household products you will need during the next world war. They will become just another division of the corporate government system already under construction. It has the political title of "privatization of government." What we see portrayed in sci-fi movies about a corporate-run world of the future is now being built in reality. One can only imagine how the philosophy of culture and government will undergo a slow but dramatic paradigm shift in public schools, to change the image of what children believe is freedom... And all of this ties into the new super-wide, super-highway.

So where else can needed goods be manufactured and transported without requiring ships? Mexico, middle Latin-American countries and South America are the most logical places left on the continent. The super-wide super-highway could also be extended south to stretch all the way to South America. Looking at a road atlas, one will find that it is actually possible to drive to Middle Latin America and South America from Mexico. It will take you a week or more from Arizona or Texas to get there. It's almost a certainty you'll be robbed and/or perhaps killed before reaching your destination. But the new limited access super-highway will be heavily patrolled and guarded, virtually eliminating that problem. (Wouldn't you like to have the video camera contract for that?) Mexico and countries south of America will be the ONLY logical choice left for manufacturing. The standard of living is already too high in America and Canada to support those "low prices" which citizens of both countries now expect to pay at big box stores. Average income is now insufficient to pay the prices of yesteryear.

In fact - we could see reverse immigration take place as suddenly Mexico becomes the land of plenty. Americans will move to new jobs south of the border. Of course, it leaves unanswered a question that's we have today: If most jobs move south of the border, how will Americans and Canadians be able to afford those products or have a decent standard of living? Certainly not on salaries from today's service jobs of cleaning buildings and fast food restaurants. This is the serious degradation of jobs toward unskilled help that is happening today. We see that our government has sold us out, to convert America into a highly depressed third world economy. The UN will not "re-distribute the wealth" as it claims as a goal.

Far more friction required to move one ton of goods over ground than over water. Oil companies will reap windfall profits from increased diesel fuel consumption as a result of increased truck traffic. "Third world countries" which are now called "emerging nations" will love the new, big business. Perhaps the pyramid and ancient city archeological sites closing and returning to ruins. Few will work at those sites to maintain them because of inferior wages. Instead, everyone will work at higher at paying jobs in mega-factories. And like China today, everyone south of the border will be driving cars. The horse and donkey will become a rare sight. Perhaps those animals will be sold to Americans and Canadians who will become too poor to afford to buy and operate a car or truck. Sound far-fetched? All things are possible until proven otherwise.

For those that laugh at these ideas they should first look at the semiconductor industry. For some thirty years, silicon chips have been manufactured in dozens of polynesian and near-east countries. The plastic anti-static tubes they are packaged in for the past 30 years, have listed about 40 of these countries with the prefacing statement "Made in one or more of the following countries: ." The point here is that chip manufacturing since the early 1970's was already making an exodus overseas. As each country's standard of living increased, corporations packed up and moved on as a country's standard of living increased, and manufacturing became too expensive.

This pillaging for cheap labor goes on today, and now chip companies are running out of poor but politically stable countries in which to manufacture needed chips. Much of the world is still involved in internal conflicts and battles with neighboring nations. These countries are too unstable for any corporation to invest more than 2 billion dollars to build a new facility, where it might be blown up or attacked at any time.

What will happen when the standard of living in Mexico, middle-Latin American and South American countries rises too high? Where will manufacturing move to when no place is left to do it with cheap labor?

As an aside - would the Chinese have listening devices planted at Bilderberg meetings they are not invited to? You better believe it. Today's highly advanced devices which can be remotely turned on and off are un-detectable. Invited or not, the Chinese will know one way or another every word that's been said there. It will be the world's public who will be the last to know, but the first to feel the meeting's effects.

Video Evidence: Computer Expert Testifies Elections in Ohio were Fixed

VIDEO: COMPUTER PROGRAMER TESTIFIES ABOUT VOTE RIGGING SOFTWARE

Computer programmer Clinton Curtis testified at the December 13th, 2004 Congressional hearing in Columbus, Ohio naming Republican Congressman Tom Feeney as the person who hired him to prepare vote-rigging software.

The programmer claims that he designed and built a "vote rigging" software program at the behest of then Florida Congressman, now U.S. Congressman, Republican Tom Feeney of Florida's 24th Congressional District.

Clint Curtis, 46, claims that he built the software for Feeney in 2000 while working at a sofware design and engineering company in Oviedo, Florida (Feeney's home district).

Curtis, in his affidavit, says that as technical advisor and programmer at Yang Enterprises, Inc. (YEI) he was present at company meetings where Feeney was present "on at least a dozen occasions".

Feeney, who had run in 1994 as Jeb Bush's running-mate in his initial unsuccessful bid for Florida Governor, was serving as both corporate counsel and registered lobbyist for YEI during the period that Curtis worked at the company.

Feeney was also concurrently serving as a Florida state congressman while performing those services for YEI. Feeney would eventually become Speaker of the Florida House before being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2002. He is now a member of the U.S. House Judiciary Committee.

At an October 2000 meeting with Feeney, according to the affidavit and BRAD BLOG interviews with Curtis over the past three days, Feeney inquired whether the company could build a "vote fraud software prototype".

At least three YEI employees are said to have been present at that meeting; Curtis, company owner, Mrs. Li Woan Yang, and her executive secretary, Mike Cohen. Two other YEI employees may have come in and out at different points of the meeting according to Curtis.

Curtis says that Feeney "was very specific in the design and specifications required for this program."

"He detailed, in his own words, that; (a) the program needed to be touch-screen capable (b) the user should be able to trigger the program without any additional equipment (c) the programming to accomplish this needed to stay hidden even if the source code was inspected."

Though there was no problem with the first two requirements, Curtis explained to the Congressman that it would be "virtually impossible to hide such code written to change the voting results if anyone is able to review the uncompiled source code"

Nonetheless, he was asked at the meeting by Mrs. Yang to build the prototype anyway.

Curtis, "a life-long Republican" at the time, claims that it was his initial belief that Feeney's interest was in trying to stop Democrats from using "such a program to steal an election". Curtis had assumed that Feeney, "wanted to be able to detect and prevent that if it occurred."

Upon delivery of the software design and documentation on CD to Mrs. Yang, Curtis again explained to her that it would be impossible to hide routines created to manipulate the vote if anybody would be able to inspect the precompiled source code.

Mrs. Yang then told him, "You don’t understand, in order to get the contract we have to hide the manipulation in the source code. This program is needed to control the vote in South Florida."

Mrs. Yang then took the CD containing the software from Curtis, reportedly for later delivery to Feeney.

In other meetings with Feeny prior to the 2000 elections, it became clear to Curtis that Feeney had plans to suppress the vote in strong Democratic precincts. In the affidavit, Curtis claims that in those meetings Feeney had "bragged that he had already implemented 'exclusion lists' to reduce the 'black vote'." Feeney also mentioned that "proper placement of police patrols could further reduce the black vote by as much as 25%."

Curtis says that he submitted his resignation to YEI effective December 2000, but stayed on until they had found someone to replace him in February of 2001. He eventually became employed by the Florida Dept. of Transportation (FDOT) after leaving YEI.

School Electricly Shocks Kids for Disapline: OK Now I'm Really Mad

Actual students & Treatment NOT PICTURED - Photo is for effect only.

State education officials in New York are calling for a near ban on the use of electric shock to discipline students at a controversial Massachusetts school for troubled children.

More than 150 of the 251 students at the Judge Rotenberg Educational Center come from New York, and 77 wear electrodes on their arms or legs that teachers use to shock them if they misbehave.

Massachusetts officials tried for years to close the Canton school, which uses an elaborate system of rewards and punishments to treat students with autism, mental retardation, and emotional problems. Judges have repeatedly protected the center’s practices, finding that for certain troubled children, the fear of an electric shock may be the best way to prevent them from hurting themselves or others….In addition to shocks, she said, the Rotenberg Center commonly restrains children with splints, helmets, or tubes and forces them to eat ‘’bland food consisting of mashed potatoes, chicken, and spinach garnished with liver powder” as punishment

Tried to close it? What were they using, a few scary bureaucratic forms? This is criminal — the way to close this school is with an armed raid. The place should be padlocked, records taken by the District Attorney, and the school’s head Matthew Israel should be arrested along with the rest of the administration.

I do not know what is more shocking.

1. JRC using cruel and unnatural punishments on vulnerable young people with neurological and/or psychological problems.

2. New York (among others) sending their vulnerable young people to be tortured at JRC.

3. The NYSED inspectors objecting in part because staff at JRC did not have the requisite qualifications to torture vulnerable young people with neurological and/or psychological problems.

4. The fact that this is an acceptable form of "treatment."

5. That there are parents who defend the JRC.

Supreme Court reverses precedent

BY DAVID ASHENFELTER and CECIL ANGEL
FREE PRESS STAFF WRITERS

June 16, 2006

In a major ruling based on a Detroit drug case, the U.S. Supreme Court said Thursday that evidence seized under a search warrant can be used in court even when police fail to announce themselves or don't give residents enough time to answer the door.

The 5-4 decision casts into doubt a 90-year-old legal precedent protecting homeowners whether they are law-abiding or not, and marks a shift resulting from President George W. Bush's most recent appointment to the high court.

Although the court majority said police still may face potential civil lawsuits for injuring people or damaging property during searches, criminal lawyers predicted wholesale violations in carrying out search warrants. Law enforcement officials, however, said police would continue to operate within the law.

The so-called knock-and-announce rule is an ancient common law principle that police must announce their presence and allow residents enough time to answer the door.

The high court's shift resulted from the retirement of moderate Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, who had expressed concerns about possible police abuses when the case first was argued in January.

The case was reargued in May after Bush nominee Samuel Alito replaced O'Connor.

Alito sided Thursday with Justice Antonin Scalia, who wrote for the majority.

OBM: Let me get this striate....1. We can be stopped in our cars for any police made up reason. 2. Police can come into our homes without knocking or announcing who they are,. 3. In New Orleans after Katrina they took away peoples right to bare arms. 4. Schcool children are being forced into school lockdowns for security reasons and being held hostage from their own parents. 5. If you have video tape evidence of the police breaking the law (Rodney King & too many others)..The police still walk. 6. The NSA is & has been spying on domestic phone calls & getting phone records from phone companies. 7. The government is attaining internet records from ISP's. 8. Companies are being allowed to escape contracts with employees and pressure people into working for less pay and little or no benefits...all the while most big companies are posting record profits. 9. At the same time greedy medical & insurance companies are driving the cost of healthcare into outer space while most Americans either can't afford it or don't have it. 10. American jobs are allowed to move overseas so the profitable companies can stuff more money into there pockets by paying slave wages to people in other parts of the world while average Americans are left with barely-above-minimum-wage-jobs to support there families on. 11. People are being lied to & told that crime is up because of jail over crowding...in stead of that fact that Americans have less money to live on now than years past. 12. Hispanic immigrants are being arrested & deported after American companies treat them like slaves...while the companies & people who hired them are not. American citizens are being striate Robbed and having all of these freedoms and privacy intrusions, meanwhile Bush, Haliburton, Enron & many others, and 9-11 are not fairly and truthfully investigated. How is it that everyone is being secretly and/or truthfully investigated but our president , government, and companies? Someone please tell me this is out of some comic book or something. Is any body paying attention? What the H*ll is going on??? WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!!!

They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin, Historical Review of Pennsylvania, 1759

Kids being Brainwashed to Accept Government Lockdown at School

Posted By: Geneticus
Date: Friday, 6 May 2005, 5:06 p.m.
Source Article

Do you know where your kids are? The government does. And they may not let you have access to your child if an event causes the school to go on lockdown while your child is in class. This is becoming an all-to-familiar event. Some criminal activity, threat, or unusual circumstance will prompt a school to go into “lockdown” mode. More and more, children and being programmed to accept the government as all-powerful, all-controling, and all of our rights are history. The next generation of kids are being taught to accept government intervention as a normal part of the day.

One extremely interesting point... no college lock downs, no adult school lockdowns, no trade school lockdowns... only elementary schools and high schools. It seems the most effort is being spent to manipulate and program the youngest and most mentally vulnerable in our society. If school lockdowns are truly a random occurance, we would see them happening at these other types of schools, as well. Wouldn't we?
